John “Jack” Anthony White (né Gillis) was born on July 9, 1975 and raised in Detroit, Michigan. As the youngest of 10 siblings, he was musically influenced by his older brothers who played in a band. He began to play the instruments they abandoned at the Gillis household. Jack started experimenting with drums, and would eventually learn to play guitar.
In elementary school, he began listening to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. During his teenage years, he began to dive into blues rock, such as Son House and Blind Willie McTell, which would inevitably shape his iconic sound.
As a senior in high school, he met Meg White at her place of employment. They both shared a love and appreciation for their local community and music. They married in September 1996, and in a reversal of tradition, he took Meg’s last name.
